# Set the amount and probability of a lead

Add an amount and a probability to your leads and define a default probability for each pipeline step to get precise statistics.

Amount and probability are very important for forecasting and sorting your leads. They can be the key to a good [sales strategy](https://www.nocrm.io/academy/how-to-set-up-a-consistent-sales-process).

You can set them on each lead, and you can also define default probabilities for the different steps of your pipelines.

## How do you set the amount and probability of a lead?

Follow these steps:

1. Open the lead.

2. Click the **Set amount** button.

3. Enter the amount and the probability.

![Ancoris Limited #2 deal screen with the amount and probability control highlighted by a red arrow, above an open deal-editing panel. Once an amount is set, click it again to change it. You can also fill in the **Amount** and **Probability (%)** fields when you create a lead with **\+ New lead**.

> **Info:** **Note**: When a lead is set to **Won**, its probability is automatically set to 100. When it is set to **Lost**, it is set to 0.

## How do you define a default probability for each step?

Having a clear sales forecast is key to a good sales strategy. Every sales director needs to know how many leads are in the pipeline, [when they are expected to close](https://help.nocrm.io/en/articles/106-estimated-closing-date.md), the total amount they potentially represent and their weighted value. With good forecasting tools, companies have the right data to make informed decisions and predict their sales performance.

That's why you can define a default probability for each step of your sales pipeline. When [creating your pipeline steps](https://www.nocrm.io/blog/plan-sales-pipeline/), an option to define the probability of every step shows up.

Example: "Called" = 20% / "Negotiation" = 80%.

If you were already using noCRM, simply edit each step to define its default probability. Based on the history of your leads, noCRM suggests a percentage for each step.

> **Success:** **Best practice**: If you need more number fields for commissions, quantities or other values, add extra number and percentage fields to your leads.
